The Australian Water Dragon is an agamid lizard native to eastern Australia from Queensland to the south. It is semi aquatic and partly arboreal.
The male, with a red chest and belly, has stronger colouring than females and juveniles and can grow to a metre long,
two thirds of which is tail. The tail helps it swim.
It has strong legs for climbing/swimming and can run on its hind legs.
Communication, like that of the Bearded Dragon, uses head bobbing and arm waving to indicate dominance and submission.
The only species in its genus, there are two subspecies: the Eastern, shown above, with a dark band behind
the eye, and the Gippsland.
