The Star or Starred Agama, also called the Stellion and Painted Agama, is a lizard of rocky habitats of Greece, Cyprus, north-eastern Africa and south-western Asia.
Despite the lovely star-shaped pose of the one above right, the "star" and "stellio" in its name refers to its spotted pattern.
It can reach a length of over 30 cm. Its rocky habitat allows it to hide in crevices when under perceived threat.
The Star Agama is the nominal of several subspecies.
Sling-tailed Agama
Stellagama/Laudakia stellio cypriaca
The Sling-tailed Agama above, named after the rings of its tail, is a subspecies endemic to Cyprus and is the island's largest lizard.
Orange-spotted Agama
Stellagama/Laudakia stellio picea
The Orange-spotted Agama goes by several other names: Black Hardun (from the German name),
Roughtail Rock Agama, and Painted Dragon. It is native to black lava desert of the Near East, hence the black and orange colouring.
Looking at the subspecies above and below, it is not surprising that there is discussion on whether to split some of them out
into separate, full species.
Painted Dragon
Stellagama/Laudakia stellio brachydactyla
The Painted Dragon is native to southern Israel, southern Jordan, Sinai, northern Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Its range overlaps with S. s. stellio. It also has bands of spiny scales along its tail.
The Painted Dragon name comes from bands of colours on the back of cream, green and orange scales.
The males display a black throat in the breeding season.
