The Red Underwing is a massive moth, hawk-moth-sized at 65-75mm wingspan, with impressive bright red underwings bordered with black then white.
UK flight time Jul-Sep.
First time I've noticed the claws on the end of the moth's feet as it hangs on to the wall of my house.
The third photo above is from Glen Sibley of Friends of Barnfield Sandbeds, a proposed new Local Nature Reserve
in Staffordshire. It was taken at a moth evening at the Sandbeds, where the moth section of this website was one
of the identification aids for the event.
This one was a bit bedraggled -- rescued from a birdbath.
The massive moth soon dried out and flew away.
