Small Elephant Hawk-moth Deilephila porcellus

Small Elephant Hawk-moth
Small Elephant Hawk-moth
The Small Elephant Hawk-moth has the same bright fuchsia pink and light khaki colouring as its larger relative, the Elephant Hawk-moth, but a different pattern. It is a little smaller and is small for a hawk-moth. Unfortunately the one shown here has damaged the upper back of its thorax and its lower back, losing hair and scales.

Its range is Eurasia and North Africa but, unlike its larger relative, only as far as western Asia. Its caterpillar is also reminiscent of an elephant's trunk with eyes.
Wingspan 40-45mm; UK flight time Jun-Jul.
