Common Footman moth, Eilema lurideola (also Manulea lurideola), above, with yellow head/border.
It is named after the livery worn by footmen. Wingspan 28-35mm; UK flight time Jul-Aug.
The Dingy Footman, Eilema griseola, looks a little
similar to the Common Footman but has much rounder wings held in a wider shape. There is also a lighter, plainer
form without the grey. Wingspan 32-40mm; UK flight time Jul-Aug.
Common or possibly Dingy Footman above from Martin Starnes: two interesting points.
Firstly how he has the knack of getting subjects to pose on his hand. Secondly, look at the length
of that tongue (rolled back in in second photo).
Martin also sends these of the same Footman, now off duty and relaxed. Unusual to see
its wings held in this manner.
Scarce Footman moth, Eilema complana, has an orange head/border and tighter wings
(on right with Common Footman). Wingspan 28-35mm; UK flight time Jul-Aug.
The Orange Footman, Eilema soroscula, is a little wider
than the Common Footman and, as its name indicates, has an all-over pale orange colour. Wingspan 27-30mm; UK flight time May-Jun.
The Buff Footman, Eilema depressa, is a variable background colour,
from grey to pale orangey yellow, with orange shoulders. Wingspan 28-36mm; UK flight time Jul-Aug.
