The Engrailed is sometimes split into two species, the Small Engrailed and the Engrailed. The two are similar in size, markings and flight time.
When regarded as two species, the Small Engrailed takes the binominal Ectropis crepuscularia and the Engrailed becomes
E. bistortata. Engrailed means a series of curved arches in heraldry. (An unrelated moth is called the "Ingrailed Clay".)
It superficially resembles several other moths, especially the Mottled, Willow, Speckled,
Pale Oak and Great Oak Beauties. Wingspan 30-40mm; flight Mar-Apr and Jul-Aug.
