Shetland Ponies are a short-legged, rugged breed native to the Shetland Isles, north of the Scottish mainland.
Typically they are some 7 hands (28in; 70 cm) up to a permitted maximum of 10.2 hands (42 in; 107 cm) tall at the "shoulder".
They have a long, thick coat and can withstand extremely cold, windy weather.
Given their (lack of) height, they are popular for young children to ride.
