Highland Cattle are a very hardy breed of cattle from the highlands and western isles of Scotland.
They are usually small, reddish brown and long-haired, typically with long, outward horns.
Black variant - often from the Western Isles of Scotland.
The shaggy coat gives proctection from the cold.
Placid natured, they are popular for nature reserve management.
It is said that most Highland Cattle used to have a black coat, but red coats became popular
when Queen Victoria, who spent much time in Scotland but was well-known for wearing widow's black (including
Whitby jet jewellery) said that she favoured the red cows.
