The prehensile tail
The Harvest Mouse is the UK's smallest mouse - really very tiny and about half the size of the House Mouse - and Europe's smallest rodent.
They live in fields of cereal (hence their name, being found when it is harvested) or in long grass.
Their nest, above, made of grass is also held up by the stems in the field.
The tail is longer than the head and body of the mouse and, unlike other mice, is prehensile (is used to cling on to cereal/grass stems
like a fifth limb). It is Britain's only native animal with a truly prehensile tail.
