English Longhorn Cattle Bos taurus taurus

English Longhorn Cattle, usually called just Longhorn Cattle in the UK, is an ancient breed of cattle from the north of England. It is always reddish brown and white, with a white dorsal line and underbelly line.

English Longhorn should not be be confused with the American Texas Longhorn which is an entirely different breed.

Typically the horns are rounded and point downwards round the face, although they can also be raised or outwards.

In the past the traditional breed was used as oxen (both bulls and cows) for pulling ploughs and carts. Cows were also used for milk production. Today the breed is mainly used for meat but also by conservationists to keep weeds and grass under control in nature reserves.
