The Pygmy Hippopotamus is one of two species of living hippo, the other being its larger and more well-known cousin the Hippopotamus.
Both are native only to Africa, the Pygmy, as its Latin name indicates, mainly to Liberia but also some other West African countries.
It is generally shy and mainly nocturnal.
The Pygmy Hippotamus or Hippo is a herbivore eating mainly grass.
Like its larger cousin, and true to its name "... potamus," it is semi-aquatic although it feeds only on land
and, if spooked, will usually run to land rather than water.
They love wallowing in water and/or mud.
