Chamois are "goat-antelopes" that live in rocky, mountainous terrain in several mountain
ranges of Europe and near Asia, including the Alps, Pyrenees, Apennines, Caucasus and others. The Pyrenean Chamois
(also in the Apennines) is a separate species, R. pyrenaica. All others are subspecies of R. rupicapra.
They are very sure-footed on steep rocky mountainsides. They are small, reaching
a maximum height of some 80cm at the shoulder, but can jump 2 metres vertically (and 6 metres horizontally).
Their small horns, on male and female, curve over like hooks at the tip.
