The American Mammoth Donkey was bred from large imported European stock (French Poitou, Andalusian) and is one of the largest breeds.
Males (Jacks) can reach over 15 hands (1.5 metres) at the withers (shoulder) and females (Jennies) a hand (4"/10cm) less.
The largest recorded was 17 hands. The big head is a Poitou trait.
They were bred mainly for crossing with horses to give large, strong working mules.
