The Tufted Deer, native to mountain forests in parts of China and (formerly?) Myanmar, is named after the pointed tuft of hair on the top of its head.
It is the only species in its genus.
Doe
Buck
Fawn
A small, dark deer with white-tipped ears, the buck has fangs (elongated canines) which protrude from its mouth
and tiny antlers (2-3cm) hidden by the tuft; the doe does not. Both have the tuft.
A solitary deer rather than a herd animal, it is related to the Muntjac, though a different genus,
and is a little slimmer and taller, reaching some 2 foot (c.60 cm) at the shoulder.
The Tufted Deer illustrated is Michie's Tufted Deer, a subspecies native to southeast China.
All subspecies are threatened by overhunting and habitat loss.
