The Sambar Deer is a tall, dark-coated deer native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast
Asia including southern China. As its scientific name indicates, neither adult has a spotted coat. Height varies over their
range but males can reach some 5 foot (over 1.5 metres) at the shoulder.

Males have antlers, grown annually. Females live in small herds, males are mainly solitary. Both are crepuscular/nocturnal.
