Pere David's Deer is a large and strangely-shaped deer from a small area of northeast China. Over 4 feet tall
at the shoulder, it is slightly taller than Red Deer.
Named after French missionary Armand David, it is currently extinct in the wild but a re-introduction
programme from stock from Woburn Abbey, England, is underway.
The stag (above) has antlers and re-grows his antlers at least once and sometimes twice a year.
The hind (above) does not have antlers.
Pere David's Deer has a reddish brown coat in the summer (above left) and a greyer brown coat in winter
(others above/below). Above right is a spotted fawn.
The dark bar on the back over the shoulder can be seen on the light coats of the herd.
