The Nilgai (meaning blue bull in Hindi), also called the Blue Buck, is native to northern, central and some of southern India. It is the largest native antelope in Asia.

Unlike other Indian and Asian antelopes, the Nilgai remains common in the wild because of the male's resemblance to a cow, resulting in the animal being afforded the same sacred status.

The bull, above left, can reach nearly 5 foot at the shoulder. Above centre is the light brown cow (female) and above right a calf. All have the characteristic black and white socks. Only the male has horns.

In the wild they generally congregate in herds of all male or all female/young.
