Steller or Steller's Sea Lion is native to rocky Pacific coasts and sea of Northwestern North America and northeast Asia,
from the Arctic Circle (Bering Strait) to California and Japan.
Steller is the largest of the six species of Sea Lion and is the only species in its genus. Adult males
can reach 3 metres (11 feet) long. The only pinnipeds larger are the Walrus (3.5 metres/12 feet) and the Elephant Seals (5-6 metres/14-16 feet).
Adult males are lighter coloured (tawny-yellow when dry) and can weigh up to a tonne, significantly larger and heavier
than the females.
They live in colonies, can swim long distances and can hold their breath underwater for over 10 minutes before
needing to surface for air.
They eat mostly fish but also other marine vertebrates and invertebrates. Their main predator is the killer whale.
