The Brown Woolly Monkey, also called the Common Woolly Monkey, is native to forests mainly of southern Colombia
but also to adjacent areas of Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.
A heavy, thick-set monkey reaching some 50-60 cm head/body height plus up to 75 cm tail and weighing
up to some 10 kg, Woolly Monkeys are related to Spider Monkeys.
Despite the name "Brown", coat colours can be light brown, dark brown, grey or black.
The head is always dark brown or dark grey. (The skull cap - above right - is optional.)
Like Spider Monkeys, the tail is fully prehensile, useful for safety in the tree-tops, and able to support the heavy monkey's weight.
They live in humid forest in groups of some 5-50 mixed individuals led by a dominant male.
