The Emperor Tamarin has a handsome, white, handlebar moustache on both male and female and may be named after German Emperor Wilhelm II,
whose handlebar moustache turned upwards rather than down.
The subspecies shown is the Bearded (S. i. subgrisescens); the nominal subspecies, the Black-chinned,
has the moustache but not the white parallel beard.
The Emperor Tamarin is native to the western Amazon (Peru, Bolivia and western Brazil).
They live in small family groups lead by the oldest female even though the groups include one or more adult males.
The groups may also include other similar species.
