The Crowned Sifaka is a large lemur native to forests of west Madagascar. It is one of 9 species of sifaka, all of which are
threatened, from vulnerable to critically endangered.
Sifakas live in small troops and move both in trees and on the ground, the latter by hopping sideways
in a ballet-like motion. They can leap some 10 metres (33 feet) per jump.
They live in groups and are territorial. The name sifaka comes from the sound of their alarm call
also made when confronting intruders.
They are vegetarian. Eyes can be blue, greeny-blue, yellow or brown. Male and female have similar appearance.
