Split out as a separate species only in 1996, the Bornean Orangutan, P. pygmaeus, is native to parts of Borneo. It has darker coppery brown hair and fatter male face flanges than the Sumatran.

The Bornean Orangutan spends more time on the ground than the Sumatran but is active in, and roosts in, the trees.
