The Southern Pig-tailed Macaque is native to southern Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
The similar-looking Northern Pig-tailed Macaque is native from Assam, India through Bangladesh to Vietnam apparently
overlapping the range in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia.
They live in hierarchical groups led by a dominant female, with female hierarchy depending
on relationship to the leader. The males' role is defence and breeding, with hierarchy decided by strength.
Foraging is mainly terrestrial but they climb well and are tamed and trained in Malaysia for
harvesting coconuts on plantations.
