The Ring-tailed Lemur, like all lemurs, is native to the island of Madagascar. It is native to southern Madagascar. Lemurs are primates, closely related to monkeys/apes and thus to humans.

Mother with baby. The Latin name "catta" is because of its striped tail. The tail is a useful wrap around for warmth/comfort and is used in display (and waving scent in the air) and balance.

Male and female have a similar appearance. The red or orange eyes have thick black eye-shadow and on some Ring-tailed Lemurs it rises to a line which joins the brow (above centre).

These do not have the eye-shadow shaped like their black noses with an upper peak joining the brow but have more round "black eyes".

They live in social groups, communicating by tail when foraging. An alpha female is the leader of the groups.
