There are some 20 different species of Mouse Lemur, all nocturnal and all native to Madagascar. The different
species have great genetic diversity and different sounds but most look fairly similar. Possibly being nocturnal and
in different regions, looks are not important to them. Shown is the Grey/Gray Mouse Lemur, Microcebus murinus,
also called Lesser Mouse Lemur, native mainly to western Madagascar.
All are small with a head/body length of some 4-5 inches and a tail a little longer.
The Grey Mouse Lemur is the largest species. They forage singly at night but sleep in mixed groups by day and, rarely
for a primate, can enter a state of torpor (semi-hibernation) in times of extreme cold or when food is short.
