The Golden-mantled Howler Monkey, also called just Mantled Howler, is native to much of Central America and the northwest tip of South America. Howler monkeys are large, robust monkeys. Their name comes from their territorial call which can be heard through forest for some 4 km and the golden fur on their backs.

Since their diet is mainly (low-energy) leaves, they spend a lot of time resting and digesting; the howl for communication also saves movement and energy.
