The Black Howler Monkey, also called Black and Gold Howler, is native to rain forests of southern Brazil, northern Argentina, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia.
Howler monkeys are fairly large, robust monkeys.
Their name comes from their territorial call (a roar rather than howl) which can be heard through forest for some 4 km.
Male Black Howlers are completely black. Howlers are mainly vegetarian, eating leaves and fruit.
Female Black Howlers (and young) have honey-coloured fur with black faces.
Howlers have prehensile tails to help their mainly arboreal lifestyle and live in small, mixed groups.
