A Wolfdog is a term for a hybrid of Wolf and domestic Dog. There have been several
deliberate such crosses in history as well as accidental hybrids. Since domestic dogs are a subspecies
(Canis lupus familiaris) of the Wolf, the two breed easily.
The Alsation (German Shepherd) dog is said to have resulted from a series of such crosses.
The Arctic Wolf is crossed with Malamutes/Huskies for certain traits (eg health, strength, stamina).
Wolfdogs are usually bred for working purposes but are classed as wild animals by many authorities.
The dog shown is "high content" wolf, being a Czechoslavakian Wolfdog
(recognised 50/50 hybrid breed of European Grey Wolf and Alsation dog) crossed back with a European Grey Wolf
(C. l. lupus). It is said Wolfdogs are less dependent and smarter than domestic dogs.
