Neumann's Grass Rat is more like a large grass mouse than a rat. It has two distinct populations in eastern Africa,
one in Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan and one in Tanzania (and maybe also Kenya).
Its habitat is dry savannah/grassland and bush. The northern population is also called the Somali
Grass Rat.
It is closely related to the similar African Grass Rat,
Arvicanthis niloticus, which has several subspecies covering savanna habitat from
Egypt to Zambia in the east, central Africa and west Africa; the African is also prevalent in part of the Middle East.
