Spinifex Hopping Mouse Notomys alexis
The Spinifex Hopping Mouse is native to arid areas of central and western Australia. As its name indicates,
this includes areas of Spinifex "grass" but also other areas.
It is one of several species of Hopping Mice, all native to Australia and all built, kangaroo-like, with longer
back limbs and short front limbs for hopping rather than running.
Despite their kangaroo-like build, they are rodents rather than marsupials. They have extremely long tails,
longer than head and body, with a small brush of fur at the end.
Mainly nocturnal, they live in family groups in burrows, huddling together to sleep by day.
