Ring-tailed Vontsira Ring-tailed Vontsira Galidia elegansThe Ring-tailed Vontsira, also (and previously) called the Ringtailed Mongoose, is endemic to Madagascar, mainly in the north and east of the island. The only species in its genus, it has mainly red fur with black feet and black rings on its tail. It climbs well in its forest habitat. Like most mongooses, it is an omnivore but mainly carnivorous.
Indian Grey Mongoose Indian or Common Grey Mongoose Herpestes edwardsii The Indian Grey Mongoose is native to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. It is a grizzled grey or tawny colour with a long tail. Living in varied habitats including close to humans, it is a brave animal, with individuals often seen taking on a cobra. Like all mongooses, they have a degree of immunity to the venom. Thanks to Dr Harsha Vardhan Reddy for the photo.
