On those rare summer evenings (UK) when it is still over 20 degrees when the sun's gone down, we go on an adventure outside and I have to sit for an hour or two on predator watch (fox, cat, owl . . . )
The parting
The parting in the forehead is a natural feature allowing the spines to form correctly when rolled up in a ball.

Interestingly, some Pygmy Hedgehogs' spines are fluorescent red/pink under UV light. (Since avian predators can see in the UV spectrum, perhaps it warns them that this animal has spikes?)
