The South African Ground Squirrel is sometimes called the Cape Ground Squirrel but is native to much of southern
Africa, including Botswana and Namibia, mainly in dry grassland areas.
Like other ground squirrels, it lives in colonies of burrows but the groups are usually of 2-3 adult females
and their multiple offspring or all male groups. They communicate visually and vocally, different pitches of alarm whistles indicating
different levels of danger.
