Siberian Chipmunk Eutamias sibiricus

Chipmunks are small ground squirrels. The Siberian Chipmunk is native to a tranche of Russia mainly east of the Urals to nearly the Russian Far East and south to northern China and Korea. It is the only chipmunk species native outside North America.

There are feral populations in Northwest Europe and Japan. Its habitat is the woodland floor. Like the tree squirrels, it stores nuts and other food for use in winter.

It has stripes on the face (unlike some striped tree squirrels) and five dark stripes on its back.

It is mainly solitary. The distinctive chipmunk stripes can just be made out on this leucistic chipmunk.

Chipmunk species are sometimes all included in one genus - Tamias. Other authorities have only the Eastern Chipmunk in Tamias, the Siberian in Eutamias and the many western American species in Neotamias.
