The Sri Lankan Leopard subspecies has a warm golden or rusty coat with usual leopard black spots and rosettes. Male and female are of similar appearance.

It is native to mainly forested or wooded areas over the whole island, since leopards climb well. Unlike African Leopards, they do not need to climb for protection since they are the largest predator (after humans) on the island. They are occasionally seen in urban/suburban areas.
