The Caracal is native to much of sub-Saharan Africa, parts of North Africa,
the Near and Middle East and eastern Central Asia into north-western India.
Its main habitat is arid semi desert, scrub and savannah.
Despite its ear-tufts, it is not closely related to the Lynx family.
It is mainly terrestrial but will climb trees pursuing prey. It is also generally solitary. Since its main prey is avian, its is diurnal and acrobatic.
Above are caracal kittens of the southern subspecies, the nominal
C. c. caracal, native to southern and eastern Africa. Adults in the previous row are also the southern subspecies.
