The Capybara is the world's largest rodent - like a giant Guinea Pig, to which it is closely related.
Like the Guinea Pig, it is native to South America.
They are about 2 feet (60 cm) tall and 4 feet long. They live close to water and spend much of their time in water.
They swim well. Their scientific names both come from the Greek for water and pig; the German for Capybara translates as water-pig.

Like the Guinea Pig, Capybaras are sociable, living in groups, and vegetarian.
The Lesser Capybara was recently split out as a full separate species in the far north of the Capybara's range.
