Hissing Isopod Armadillidium officinalis

The Hissing Isopod or Woodloouse fully curls into a ball for defence but also rubs its feet on its shell to make a "hissing" sound - more so when the whole colony is startled and does so. They can be plain graphite grey or a red-brown colour and grow to 20mm long. They are native to southern Europe (especially Spain, but also Sicily and Greece) and possibly the near East.
