The East African Red-legged Millipede has a variety of common names including Mombassan Train Millipede and
Tanzanian or Kenyan (Giant) Red-legged. Native to East Africa, they live in dark, damp tree roots and leaf litter where they eat leaf litter,
fruit and even sometimes decaying animals.
They are black, or sometimes dark brown, including black or dark brown inner rings but have bright red faces, antennae, vents and legs.
Males are glossy black/brown and females are matt. They can grow to some 25cm long.
Like other large African millipedes, they can discharge foul-smelling acid from their sides for defence.
