The Giant African Millipede is one of the world's largest, growing to some 15 inches (38cm) long. It can be black or brown with mahogany or reddish inner rings, antennae and legs. It is native to dry areas of much of East and Southern Africa and can climb trees. It is mainly nocturnal and vegetarian. It can live for 5-7 years.

It has mites which help to keep in clean. Under threat, it will curl up and can discharge a foul-smelling acid.
