The photos immediately above are thought to be of the Blue-winged Olive Mayfly, Serratella ignita. It is a
small to medium mayfly with 3 tails - it retains its central tail when transposing from nymph to dun. Only the sub-adult ("dun") is "blue-winged"
and "olive"-bodied. The full adult ("spinner") has clear wings and a rustier brown body. It is prevalent throughout UK near clear water much of summer.
My thanks to Martin Starnes for the photos of this species.
A reasonably common species of mayfly in the UK is the Pond Olive, Cloeon dipterum, above.
A darker species with AWACS-like overeye radars.
A lighter, less-marked species.
