The American Cockroach, also called the Common Cockroach (as is the German), is a very successful species of
insect that has survived for millions of years and spread around the globe. It is common on every continent. Despite its name, it
originated in Africa and the Middle East.
It grows to 4-5cm long. It can eat anything organic but mainly vegetable matter. Its main job is to recycle
debris, left overs or decaying matter.
Images above show female cockroaches carrying an "ootheca", the name given to the egg sac of cockroaches and related mantises.
It is gregarious, living in large concentrations of multi-generational cockroaches (roaches in American English).
