Owl Midges are also called Moth Flies and Drain or Sewer Flies. They are extremely small
(2-4mm wingspan) and covered in hairs (often patterned) which make them look like tiny moths.
They are often found around stagnant water, damp woods and drains and sewers since the
adults lay eggs in stagnant water or slime and the larvae feed on decaying matter.
They are harmless (and useful) and adults live for only some 5 days. There are nearly 100 known
species in the UK alone and it is notoriously difficult to identify them to species level.
