The adult Satellite Moth is a large, brownish moth (over 40mm wingspan) prevalent over most of northern and temperate Eurasia, named after small white dots around the stigmata on the wings. Its dark brown, red-headed caterpillar has a few small white marks on the flanks.

The caterpillar emerges around May and eats until July, when it pupates and falls in leaf litter. It eats leaves of many trees and shrubs as well as, surprisingly, other caterpillars and larvae.
