The Common Froghopper is a variable plant bug of many disguises. It can be plain or patterned,
browns or black/grey/white and often mimics other froghoppers' costumes.
It is some 5-7mm long and is found on bushes and grassland through the summer.
Those shown on this page are all thought to be Common Froghoppers (but I'm uncertain of a couple).
Even on one site, any variations can appear.
They are mainly active in the day but are attracted to light at night.
The Froghopper is also called the Spittlebug and the Common Froghopper is the main culprit
for the foamy "spittle", also called Cuckoo Spit, which it creates on plants to protect its nymph.
"Cuckoo Spit" or froghopper spittle, inside which the spittlebug nymph, above right, develops.
