The sixteen-spot Orange Ladybird: this gardeners' friend in a plastic mac and see-through visor eats mould and mildew.
Always has a bright orange background colour and usually has 16 white spots, but can have 12 or 14. Underside is wholly orange.
(The ladybird called the Sixteen-spot is a separate, small, yellow species with black spots.)
Usually found on deciduous trees eating mildew. Also attracted to light at night.
6-7mm long
Orange Ladybird larvae are yellow and white with black spots.
They also eat mildew and are not interested in the aphids above, although they may take small ones.
The pupa of the Orange Ladybird is black with yellow markings.
