This black ground beetle, growing to 4.5cm long, is often called just the Tyrant Ground Beetle,
but that name is also given to other members of the genus and even to the whole Anthia genus, in which case
this one becomes the Saber-toothed Tyrant Ground Beetle. It is native to arid rocky or forest habitat in South Africa.
Like the others in its genus it is flightless but a fast predator of insects on the ground. It is also able to spray
formic acid some 30cm away to temporarily blind attackers or prey.
