Eastern Lubber Grasshopper Romalea microptera (also R. guttata)

The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper, also called Florida Lubber, is native to central and south-eastern USA.

It is a large grasshopper at up to 8cm long and slow-moving. It cannot fly. Its bright colours tell potential predators that it is distasteful and toxic. It also secretes a foul liquid when attacked. It can be a plant pest, especially to Florida's citrus plantations.
