The Giant Shovelnose Guitarfish, sometimes called the Common Shovelnose or just Giant Guitarfish, is native mainly to coastal
warm waters of the Indo-Pacific from India to the East China Sea and northern Australia. It can also be found in brakish and even freshwater systems.
It can grow up to about 2.7 metres long and can be distinguished from similar-sized wedgefish by its slightly translucent snout, by its first dorsal fin
being well back behind its pelvic fin and by its unforked tail. Its topside is light brown without significant spots.
It is critically endangered. Threats include by-catch from boats trawling the seabed and intentional fishing for the shark fin trade.
