There are two species of Snipefish which look similar, the Longspine shown here and the Slender, which also has a long spine on its second dorsal fin. The Longspine Snipefish is native to the Indian, western Pacific and southeast Atlantic Oceans. Snipefish are related to Shrimpfish and Pipefish.

The Longspine is a reddish (pink, orange) fish with a silvery underside. It grows to 20cm including its elongated snout. Diet is zooplankton.
